Heather is a native of Las Vegas, though she's been out of town for a few years. She has recently returned, now has a job in the DA's office (she's not ADA or DA, just a lawyer in the office), and she frequents local night spots.

Description

At 5'11", Heather's height may be the first thing that catches the eye, but after that, it could be the wealth of dark brown hair that cascades to the small of her back (if it's loose), the unusual bright green of her eyes, or just the fact that she's stacked and damn good looking.

She wears a suit that marks her as either a businessperson or a lawyer. It's a dead giveaway. The navy skirt stops exactly two inches above her knees and her feet are clad in navy pumps that give another inch to her already significant height. The navy blazer sits smoothly over a cowl-necked ivory blouse. Her dark hair is confined to a classy chignon for business hours, and she carries a brown leather briefcase with her most of the time.

Background

Las Vegas. The City that literally never sleeps. Most people forget that off the Strip there are whole communities of people who actually live in this desert oasis. Heather Granger was one of those people. She spent her childhood in a rundown trailer park near the edge of the city with her mom and her grandmother. Her mother was a waitress, and she worked at a number of the lower-end casinos. And sometimes she worked on her back too. She never brought her johns home. Every once in a while there was a real boyfriend; three or four moved in and one lasted almost a year. Some were decent, others were bastards, and Heather learned very fast not to get attached to any of those guys. Heather saw her fair share of violence — turf wars, her mother came home beat up now and then — but because her mom worked nights and was home in the daytime she was relatively shielded from most of it.

When Heather was 14 her mother was found in an alley behind her most recent workplace. With no idea who her father was and her only living relative a 76-year-old grandmother who was sent out-of-state just a year before and had dementia, the girl was put into the System.

It was bad. Heather was growing up to be a beautiful girl and although there are good foster homes in the system, there are many more bad ones. She was beaten in one; the father in the second was a total letch; the third one was actually decent — the mom emphasized school a lot and showed Heather the route *out* of this mess — but even with the check from the state, she just couldn't make ends meet so Heather ultimate had to go back into the system. The fourth and fifth were a nightmare. A teenaged foster brother in her fifth home tried to rape her. She was 17 when the social worker managed to convince her to apply to college and get all the tests out of the way —- and Heather was right off the charts smart.

A full scholarship to the University of Nevada-Reno got her a Bachelor's degree in History. Her marks from there earned her a place at UC-Berkeley's law school. Her dirty little secret is that in order to pay for her high-class education she was a high-class call girl — something that would come back to haunt her when she returned to Las Vegas as an adult. She landed herself a job in the DA's office, and she was very frugal with that money generally, strictly separating out her savings from what she had to live on. But she has a bit of a weakness for blackjack and whatever extra she had every month went to the casinos. One night she was flush with a streak of winning… and she bet far more than she had, taking out a marker at the casino. When the marker came due, however, she found herself approached by a man working for the owner. They would forgive her debt in return for a favor to be named later.

It's called making a deal with the devil. And Heather took it. Even now, she has no idea when Daniel Linderman might come calling for that favor.

• LEGAL KNOWLEDGE: She graduated with honors from UC-Berkeley's law school. She is licensed to practice in both California and Nevada, with a concentration on criminal law.
• INTELLIGENCE: Though not a full-out genius, Heather is terribly bright and learns quickly. She is a voracious reader, not just of law journals but of biographies, history, and fiction. It gives her a wide range of interests.
• GAMBLING: She has a bit of a long-running problem with blackjack. She absolutely loves the game. She's also quite skilled at various forms of poker, and she has learned to play baccarat in hopes of at some point being able to join the more elite tables. Downside: What Heather really has is a gambling addiction. She's not so far down that she squanders her whole paycheck or anything like that — she's very rigid about being certain all her necessities are budgeted for. But she only has spending money if she does well at the tables.
